Logistics transport planning bosses looking to do their bit for the environment may wish to keep an eye on the latest project from one manufacturer.
Volvo Trucks is set to begin testing a biofuel that generates low carbon emissions, without compromising on overall driving performance.
The group intends to start conducting field tests on the Bio-DME substance early next year in order to assess its potential as a vehicle fuel.
If it proves effective, Volvo Trucks claims it could provide an alternative to replace around 50 per cent of the diesel currently used in transport operations across Europe.
Product manager of engines Mats Franzen said: "The performance and driving properties are exactly the same as in the diesel variant.
"The difference and the major benefit with Bio-DME lie in its low carbon dioxide emissions."
Testing is expected to last for up to three years, after which time the project could lead to full-scale production, the company added.
Earlier this month, Volvo Trucks reported a 59 per cent fall in vehicle deliveries during August compared with the same month last year.
