Cloud computing has a pivotal role for companies operating in the logistics field and can help realise cost reductions, those in supply chain strategy may be interested to discover.

Bryn Heimbeck, chief executive of Trade Tech, has told IFW Net that logistics is the industry that is most geographically challenged and so has the most potential gains from the use of this technology.

He explained: "In many ways, logistics is the assembly of pivotal information and command sets that represent and create the digital picture of a shipment."

Mr Heimbeck said that the real challenge underpinning supply chain strategy is the transmission and administration of information across a wide range of local entities.

He said that the use of the cloud-based model can enable collaboration at a much cheaper rate and has the added benefit of operating in real time.

A recent study published by CIO.co.uk has found that quality IT services are becoming increasingly important for those involved in supply chain strategy, with good communication between logistics professionals and their IT specialists being highlighted as a crucial aspect of business success.
