A leading business organisation is calling for the government to cut VAT in the construction sector, which could affect the industry's
supply chain transport planning.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has claimed that the government's current strategy is not working and called for a greater emphasis to be given to growth.
It highlighted the fact that high unemployment has made it extremely important that the government creates policies that will incentivise entrepreneurship and the expansion of existing companies.
John Walker, the national chairman of the FSB, claimed that the government's current policies would work if consumer spending was higher but that in the current economic environment they are not effective.
He said: "With economic growth sluggish at best, spending on the high street low and unemployment high, the government needs to ratchet up its growth agenda and send a clear signal to the business community that it will support them."
Earlier this month, the Confederation of British Industry forecast an expansion in manufacturing output despite slackening demand.
