The globalisation of industry has led more and more companies to rely on having an effective supply chain transport strategy, an expert has claimed.
Leslie Taylor-McLaughlin, speaking on behalf of WWPC - WorldWide Partnership to IFW, highlighted the difficulty that is inherent in logistics.
She said: "The challenge of meeting target delivery times, while precisely following varied global rules and regulations, requires creativity, true talent and adaptability."
Ms Taylor-McLaughlin praises the middle-level positions of the logistics industry as the "unsung heroes" of commerce, as without their work the industry would grind to a halt.
She emphasised that the growing competitiveness facing global businesses is putting the spotlight firmly on logistics cost reductions as a way to get ahead of their rivals.
Recent figures published by Transporeon and Capgemini showed that European supply chain costs are at a three year high due to factors including rising diesel costs.
Among the worst-hit industries are those in the construction trade, with timber transport costs rising by more than ten per cent in the second quarter of 2011.
