Sustainable supply chains can also be short, efficient and cost effective, according to an expert.
Steve Millward, supply chain and sustainability directors at Jewson, told industry professionals at the Sustainable Business conference that it was time for a renewed focus on green supply chains, the Builders Merchant Journal reports.
"I've been a builders merchant for 40 years and for 35 of those years I hadn't the foggiest idea what a supply chain was.
"We bought things cheap and we sold them dear and when we went to our suppliers and said you've got to be cheaper they asked us how," he said.
By making changes based on an understanding of their impact on the environment, businesses could become more efficient both in terms of energy consumption and making profit, Mr Millward added.
Dave Meyer, a supply chain analyst, recently told news website triplepundit.com that companies must be vigilant with suppliers in order to maintain sustainable supply chains.
