Honda's decision to sell its Formula 1 team could have repercussions affecting up to 1,000 members of staff throughout the world, it has been suggested, in a demonstration of just how important supply chains are to many businesses.
The supply chain involved with supporting Honda's F1 team could slow down as a result of the decision, leading to 800 job losses in the UK and 200 in the wider world.
Ron Lynch, regional director for the east Midlands at the Director's Institute, told the BBC: "Any large company is going to have a supply chain and the supply chain tends to be made up of smaller businesses.
"It's the impact on them that will be felt more acutely. It could be anybody from an engineering component manufacturer down to an electrician who services the premises or even the cleaners."
Companies hoping to assess their own supply chain or reorder it to protect themselves from exposure to such dangers may do well to hire a third-party supply chain management company, which can offer experience and confidence in reshaping a supply chain.
