An annual Logistics Day has been announced for November 14th and will highlight the important role
supply chain strategy plays in the economy.
Theo de Pencier, chief executive of the Freight Transport Association, has told IFW that logistics is at the heart of everything that industry does and should be recognised accordingly.
He said that the low recognition of this service is a symptom of its efficiency but said it is time for the sector to shout about its own successes.
Mr Pencier claimed: "We need the public to look beyond its own immediate interests and realise the broader benefits of, for the sake of argument, overnight deliveries, truck stops, rail freight terminals or greater airport capacity."
He called on the government to reduce fuel duty and to encourage more young people into the sector, but said that raising the industry's profile is the essential first step to improving the industry's fortunes.
Last month, Gartner research vice president Steve Steutermann claimed that supply chain planning has become essential companies' successes.
