The government has confirmed its intention to launch a new organisation that will receive complaints in relation to grocery supply chain strategy issues.
Set to be called the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA), the organisation will reside within the Office of Fair Trading and deal with problems that emerge in relation to how supermarkets interact with bodies at any point in the supply chain, including those involved in transport planning.
While non-governmental organisations and trade associations will not be able to lodge complaints directly, they will still be able to offer advice to stakeholders.
Edward Davey, the consumer minister, said: "We want to make sure that large retailers can't abuse their power by transferring excessive risks or unexpected costs onto their suppliers.
He added that such pressures are "bad for producers and bad for consumers", particular due to how they can impact on choice and innovation.
Supermarket brand Waitrose recently confirmed it has appointed a new supply chain director, David Jones, in order to improve the strategies it currently has in place.
