Fleet operators could benefit from greater maintenance of vehicles operating within a company supply chain.
Cleveland Police carried out a series of spot checks on commercial vehicles in the area last Thursday and found that a number had serious defects.
Six lorries were taken off the road, while two drivers were given notices to rectify certain problems, the Gazette reports.
Inspector Gary Hutton of the Roads Policing Unit commented: "The work we do to stop and check these vehicles is vital to all our safety."
He warned that if a defective heavy goods vehicle was involved in an accident, it would cause "chaos" in the immediate vicinity.
For instance, he said roads would be disrupted and the local community would be affected.
Inspector Hutton added that Cleveland Police will continue to carry out spot checks to ensure that heavy loads are transported safely.
This comes after Jane Gilham of Pivotal Performance told Logistics Manager that commercial vehicle drivers need to be given adequate training and guidance on safe motoring.
