RoSPA calls for more driver training

Tuesday, 24/11/2009 11:43
A leading road safety group has highlighted the importance of regular training in helping to keep drivers safe on the roads.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) says refresher courses and ongoing learning are key to stamping out bad habits and reducing the number of collisions in the UK.

According to figures published by the Scottish government this week, more than a third of fatal road accidents in the country during 2008 were caused by loss of control.

Failing to look properly, reckless driving and travelling too fast were among the other most common factors contributing to road accidents, the data showed.

RoSPA's road safety officer for Scotland Kathleen Braidwood said the figures suggested more should be done to help cut out bad habits and improve concentration on the roads.

"They highlight a real need to promote a lifelong learning approach to training - for individuals but also for companies employing people who drive in the course of their work," she commented.

The call comes after RoSPA last month urged transport planning bosses to take a "serious approach" towards driver training in order to help manage occupational road risk, keeping their employees safe and reducing long-term costs.
