Supply chain challenges revealed

Wednesday, 21/7/2010 04:43
The biggest challenges being faced by supply chains have been revealed in a new report.

According to AMR Research's report, entitled Transportation Management: Lessons From a Difficult Two Years, the main obstacle is managing external factors, such as the global economic crisis, and tackling green issues.

Three factors have had a particularly strong impact in the consumer products, food and beverage, and chemical manufacturing industries, the report suggested.

They are oil price volatility, the recession and major catastrophes, including the recent Icelandic volcanic ash cloud that caused widespread disturbance.

A key priority for companies now is to develop more sophisticated and flexible transportation systems and to adopt more sustainable and environmentally friendly processes, while continuing to meet consumer demand.

The report revealed that 86 per cent of firms have drawn up some kind of plan to deal with issues pertaining to sustainability.
