Shelf availability and costs in the physical supply chain for consumer goods has got everything to do with the current focus on sustainability, a new study by the Global Commerce Initiative together with Capgemini has claimed.

The report, titled Future Supply Chain 2016: Serving Consumers in a Sustainable Way, proposed a new integrated supply chain model that takes into account sustainability parameters.

Such parameters include carbon dioxide emissions reduction, reduced energy consumption, better traceability and reduced traffic congestion, as well as traditional measures like on-shelf availability, cost reduction and financial performance.

Jose Luis Duran, chairman of the management board at Carrefour group and GCI co-chairman, said: "Regulations as well as resource scarcity, climate change, security, require new thinking, new approaches and new collaboration on infrastructures."

The Future Supply Chain project brings together 24 retail and consumer packaged goods companies and several industry and standards organisations.

Their aim is to addresses sustainability challenges and come up with proposals that will prompt companies to change their operations.

This most recent study follows an earlier report titled 2016: The Future Value Chain.
