Tesco boss calls for greener business sector

Wednesday, 10/6/2009 04:01
The head of retail giant Tesco has called for greater efforts to be made to tackle climate change.

Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of the supermarket chain, said encouraging consumers to become greener would lead to more businesses embracing eco-friendly policies, reports Click Liverpool

Indeed, he stated that if consumer demand for green products went up, companies would be more inclined to lower their own carbon footprints, possibly by revising their supply chain strategy.

"By building demand for low-carbon consumption, consumers will stimulate competition between businesses to produce greener alternatives,” Sir Terry commented.

He said if consumers are given more information about products’ carbon footprint is given to shoppers, this could change spending habits.

Sir Terry added that this would in turn result in a greener supply chain for the company.

The comments come shortly after Tesco opened a new store in Dumfries, which has been designed to run on renewable energy and has been built with eco-friendly and sustainable materials.
