A leading logistics firm has passed a major milestone in its supply chain transport planning efforts for the London 2012 Olympics.

UPS has announced that it has transported the 250,000th Olympic item at its site in Tilbury in an event that was witnessed by its four games ambassadors, Ben Ainslie, Denise Lewis, Steve Rider and Louis Smith.

The company has also announced two successful test runs that formed part of its schedule of London Prepares events designed to test its infrastructure.

Ms Smith, a British Olympic Bronze medallist, highlighted the thoroughness of UPS's preparations and said that it is not just athletes spending the summer training.

She claimed: "It has been a fantastic experience to visit UPS's London 2012 Logistics Centre and see the hard work that has taken place over the last couple of months, testing the logistics set-up that will make each sport possible come competition time."

Earlier this month, the company announced that Jim Barber would be the new president of the UPS Europe Region.
