Wheel security best practice guide launched

Transport planning chiefs have been advised of the importance of wheel maintenance and security as part of their overall best practice strategies.

According to analysis by the Transport Research Laboratory, there were almost 400 cases of wheel loss from lorries during the course of 2006.

The Freight Transport Association is therefore reminding drivers and maintenance staff of the importance of having a good wheel security procedure in place.

Along with ATS Euromaster, the Institute of Road Transport Engineers and Sita UK, the organisation has launched a new guide aimed at improving wheel maintenance in the industry.

Wheel Security: A Best Practice Guide highlights the most common signs associated with poorly secured wheels and offers guidance on how to resolve the issue.

Mark Forster, fleet compliance and auditing manager for Sita UK, said the guide will offer advice to all relevant staff, helping to reduce the risk of wheel loosening or loss.

Last week, drivers were also reminded of the need to keep a check on tyre pressures after the results of Michelin's 2009 Fill Up With Air campaign revealed that a third of UK motorists are taking to the roads on dangerous and under-inflated tyres.
