Would-be drivers warned of HGV training scam

Wannabe HGV drivers have been warned about the dangers of falling prey to illegitimate training companies by a new TV programme on the BBC.

The BBC's 'You've Been Scammed' show on Monday morning told how a 23-year-old man was swindled out of £2,400 by an unnamed online broker who had claimed to be able to get him through all his medicals, both the HGV theory and practical tests and get him a job with a high street business.

In the end, all he got for his money was a medical he could have arranged himself and provisional licence.

Sean Pargeter, director of EP Training, said that people need to be wary of the tactics used by brokers on the internet who claim to have the inside track of the transport planning sector.

“People are being sold an easy fast track to making serious money,” Pargeter told the BBC. “In reality they employ no instructors and have no vehicles, and their ‘jobs’ are just taken from other web sites.”

Three years ago a BBC investigation found that fake HGV licences could be purchased on the internet.
