Only one in ten supply chain managers actively model their company's supply chain carbon footprint, recent research has discovered.
A survey of 245 supply chain executives between May and July 2008 found that just ten per cent of executives modelled their carbon footprints and have created a sustainability programme.
The research, conducted by Accenture, also found that more than one in three supply chain executives (37 per cent) did not know how much carbon was emitted from their supply chains.
Small and medium-sized companies could reduce their own carbon footprints by contracting a third party supply chain management company.
Reducing the carbon footprint of a supply chain could also help increase efficiency in the company's supply chain and reduce costs.
"Supply chain masters are making great strides in linking cost effectiveness, customer service and sustainable supply chain practices," said Jonathan Wright, senior executive in Accenture's supply chain management practice.
"Despite today's reduced energy costs, there continues to be a business case for greening the supply chain, resulting in lower costs as well as environmentally responsible processes."
