Continuous improvement 'saves haulage jobs'

Monday, 17/8/2009 05:09
Efforts of continuous improvement have been a success for one haulage company that has managed to save nearly 70 jobs.

Two months ago, employees at Leggetts Transport agreed to take a ten per cent pay cut so they would be able to hold onto their position at the firm.

However, the business – which is based in Bury St Edmunds - then went into administration, but has now been sold to Marmex.

It is "unusual" for such a company to risk so much to save a business, administrator Greg Palfrey from Smith & Williamson told EADT 24.

He explained to the newspaper the focus had been on finding a new owner that could maximise the return for creditors and safeguard Leggetts Transport.

"Saving almost 70 jobs is good news given the severe difficulties the haulage industry is facing in the recession," stated Mr Palfrey.

"Working with the purchaser we have been able to achieve this and greatly enhance recoveries from existing contracts. We are pleased with the outcome."

Legitts Transport is located on Elmswell Road, in Woolpit.
