Government called to intervene in supply chains

Tuesday, 24/6/2008 05:28
The government should be looking down company's supply chains, it has been claimed by a pressure group.

Campaign group the War on Want has issued a statement calling for the UK government to take an active stance in watching the supply chains of British companies, following Primark's disassociation of three of its suppliers.

The high street clothes store found that three of its Indian suppliers were using child labour to add detailing to clothes such as sequins and embroidery.

John Hillary, of the War on Want told the BBC about its ideas on corporate responsibility throughout the supply chain: "We have health and safety regulations in all of the workplaces in this country so it's a fairly understood idea.

"What we're saying is that the British government should be looking down the supply chain, all the way to the factories in China, in Bangladesh, in India, and they should be calling on our retailers to ensure that those workers have proper terms and conditions."

The news of Primark's supply chain comes as a shock to most customers, although it is still an issue most in Britain are aware of, but do not take too seriously.
