Green supply chain can hinge on IT cred, say experts

A green supply chain - this year's hot topic, it seems - is often undermined by one thing, according to some analysts; green IT.

Implementing green IT throughout a company is more than simply not printing your emails but "looking at elements like intrinsically recycling core parts of products", claims Chris Haynes, director for the Department for Work and Pensions' EDT, Delivery and Transformation Group.

Chris Haynes and head of business partnerships Damien Kennedy both spoke to publicservice.co.uk regarding what green IT is, and how the government should achieve standards in order to assist those hoping to implement it into their supply chains.

Mr Kennedy stated that the priorities to getting things done include, "education, understanding, dissemination of information and procuring as well as using greener IT that has passed through a sustainable supply chain."

The comments come as consumers are expecting more and more of the companies they buy from to be open about the effect their manufacturing supply chain has on the environment.

Calls for carbon credits or a carbon 'calorie counter' on products may soon mean that businesses are checked stringently on their green credentials, and IT could well be one area to watch out for.

Often, outsourcing a supply chain can help a business achieve the desired changes it needs to stay at the forefront of a market.
