Justifying the cost spent on making their supply chains green is the biggest barrier to adapting most business' supply chains, it has been found.

While many businesses in the UK would like to be able to stamp 'GREEN' on their product, their supply chain is a difficult aspect to change and, according to a new report, it is the trouble in justifying the cost connected to researching the chain that sticks in many businesses throats.

The study, carried out jointly by CSC, Manhattan Associates Inc, IBM and Supply Chain Management Review magazine, found that 78 per cent of respondents are assessing or implementing a change in their supply chains.

Of those still assessing a change, two thirds agreed that cost justification was the biggest barrier in their way, while 40 per cent of those already making a change had no plans laid out to assess return on their investment.

Having a greener supply chain could be beneficial to companies looking to thoroughly go green, and could help images of food production companies, for instance, and with oil so expensive it certainly seems like a viable option to look at reducing expenditure on petrol.

However to conduct such an activity purely in-house appears to be an extremely taxing job, according to the report.
