Globalisation and expanding supply chains should come under the wing of chief information officers, a report in Information Week (IW) has argued.
Dealing with the growing importance and centralisation of supply chain management, the IW report suggests that as supply chains become increasingly complex, there needs to be a greater role from management in order to ensure chief information officers can provide the best possible input.
"Closer engagement with supply chain strategy and execution offers a great chance for chief information officers to break out of the silos that all too often have limited... involvement to acquiring and maintaining... applications without then actually participating in their use and analysing their effectiveness," explained the report.
Limiting the involvement of a chief information officer was described as a "glaring mistake".
Smaller enterprises which do not have a vast management range, however, may benefit instead from contracting a third-party supply chain management company.
Such an organisation could bring in a wealth of external expertise to ensure a business is operating the most effective - and cost-effective - supply chain possible.
