Nestle supply chain changes please Greenpeace

Swiss company Nestle has announced it is to alter its supply chain by not using companies that contribute to deforestation in the process of making palm oil, in what Greenpeace is describing as a "very positive step".

Nestle will be working with non-profit body The Forest Trust to ensure that the production of palm oil for its consumer goods does not result in the destruction of fragile tropical environments.

In a statement the company said it "has entered into a partnership with The Forest Trust - a global non-profit organisation - that will help Nestle to build responsible supply chains by identifying and addressing embedded social and environmental issues".

The company said it was now studying supply chains to determine a similar target for the pulp and paper it uses.

Greenpeace has been campaigning for Nestle to alter its polices for eight weeks, but said "we didn't expect Nestle to come up with such a comprehensive 'zero deforestation' policy so quickly".
