Only one in ten companies are paying attention to the carbon footprint of their supply chain, it has been claimed.
Research from consultants Accenture has found that in a survey of 245 supply chains, only ten per cent were implementing sustainability initiatives.
Jonathan Wright, senior executive in Accenture's supply chain management practice, said: "Supply chain masters are making great strides in linking cost effectiveness, customer service and sustainable supply chain practices.
"Despite today's reduced energy costs, there continues to be a business case for greening the supply chain, resulting in lower costs as well as environmentally responsible processes."
Other results from the study suggested that one third of supply chain executives have no awareness at all of the level of supply chain emissions in their networks.
It did, however, find that 86 per cent had taken up at least one green initiative in their warehouses, predominantly to do with recycling and using an increasing amount of natural light.
