Sainsbury's improves supply chain waste operations

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has revealed that it has integrated the anaerobic digestion (AD) process into its existing supply chain operations in order to deliver a zero carbon increase.

Previously, the chain sent 80,000 tonnes of waste to landfill every year, which was subsequently proving costly as landfill prices steadily increased.

However, following the retailer's commitment to sending no waste to landfill as part of its sustainability objectives, it acknowledged the need within the business to radically change the way it dealt with waste, without a negative impact on existing operations.

Last week, it was announced that supermarkets could soon face a major legal crackdown over their use of excess packaging in the supply chain.

Sainsbury's became the target of a potentially significant test case regarding its alleged breach of EU packaging laws and could now be fined up to £3,000 for the offence.

"The packaging of the product in question has now been reduced by 53 per cent, and is set to be reduced by at least another ten per cent within the next few months," a spokesman stated. ADNFCR-1654-ID-800076649-ADNFCR
