Walmart alters supply chains strategy

Thursday, 12/8/2010 04:09
Global supermarket giant Walmart has altered its supply chains strategy by aiming to cut down the amount of cardboard used in its products.

According to the US-based company, which owns British store Asda, the move will not only be a feather in its sustainability cap, but will help to streamline its supply chain by reducing the weight of goods transported.

The supply chain strategy is the result of its collaboration with the non-profit organisation Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and consultancies ClearCarbon and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Jim Stanway, Walmart's senior director of global supplier initiatives, told the Guardian: "We're certainly not going to be asking suppliers to do anything other than reduce those emissions and also reduce the costs … so it's a rational economic discussion at the end of the day."

Meanwhile, Bradford-based supermarket giant Morrisons has formed a partnership with First Milk, one of Britain's largest farmer-owned dairy businesses, in an effort to improve the sustainability of the UK cheese supply chain.
