Broad approaches 'the key' to supply chain optimisation

The key to supply chain optimisation is to use a broad approach, which will then make it easier to streamline a strategy, one expert has claimed.

In an article for PWE magazine, Roger Williams, chief executive officer of the UK Warehousing Association, said that there has a been a "sharp upturn" in the number of companies that choose to outsource logistics and supply chain management functions to third party logistics service providers.

He explained that as well as helping companies to achieve significant cost savings, this enables a business to enjoy shorter order cycles, better customer service and improved all-round business efficiency.

"There is no question that an effectively managed supply chain can positively influence business performance and, if companies are going to succeed in an increasingly competitive and unpredictable environment, every link in the chain must operate at optimum efficiency," Mr Williams stated.

According to Bruce Tompkins, executive director of Tompkins Supply Chain Consortium, 'chief supply chain officer' is becoming a more common job title among firms across the UK as firms realise it is important that they keep up to speed with developments in the sector.
