According to Torex, retailers should focus their energies on creating and maintaining an accurate and effective model in order to gain a competitive advantage, Logistics Manager reports.
Helen Slaven, vice-president of retail at the trade technology specialists, is quoted by the publication as stating: "Some of the fashion retailers we speak to about this issue are still relying on legacy spreadsheet-based solutions for stock planning and distribution requirements."
She added that the model has a "limited capacity to cater for the flexible needs of local markets".
Advocating the use of automated merchandise planning systems, Ms Slaven also said it remains vital for firms to take into account variables such as store types and local market requirements.
Recently, the express delivery company City Link opened two new regional hubs in the UK.
