The government has proposed an increase in the upper speed limit for the motorways, which could improve the efficiency of companies'
logistics strategies.
Philip Hammond, the transport secretary, has announced a consultation on increasing the speed limit for these roads to 80mph, which could reduce the time taken to transport goods across the UK.
He highlighted changes to vehicles since the speed limit was initially set at 70mph in 1965 and improvements in safety as key factors in the decision.
The government has also predicted that by changing these rules the country could experience hundreds of millions of pounds in savings each year.
Mr Hammond said: "While we must ensure that our roads remain among the safest in the world, we must also consider the huge economic benefits that can be created by shortening journey times."
Last month, Global Action Plan development officer Neeral Shah highlighted the savings in
logistics transport planning that can be realised by eco-driving.
