Farmers and retailers told to work together

Farmers and retailers should look to their supply chains in order to ensure their good working relationship does not suffer under the pressures of the current economic climate, it has been suggested in a Farmers Guardian report.

Speaking to delegates at the IGD Conference in London on Tuesday (October 14th) NFU president Peter Kendall said that farmers and retailers working together would be the only way to ensure healthy sales during such a time.

"We are moving into an era where security of supply is going to be a critical factor," the Farmers Guardian quoted him as saying.

"British retailers have a reputation for being world leaders and I want you to show leadership now by developing a sustainable supply chain, based on long-term relationships, delivering what is, in the end, the key for consumers - stable and secure food supplies."

The conference was attended by leaders of both large retailers and farms.

Reassessing a supply chain is one of the most effective ways of adjusting the costs of a business, and improving efficiency.

A third party supply chain management company could offer expertise in redesigning a supply chain.
