Finnish company Itella Logistics has announced that it will build a new hi-tech logistics centre in the town of Pennala, which could improve supply chain cost reduction for nearby firms.
In partnership with retailer Rautakesko, the company will create a 70,000 sq m facility to centralise domestic warehousing in the town, making use of energy-efficient warehousing and heating technology for logistics process improvement.
Following the expansion, which is due to begin in May and be completed by June 2013, Itella's storage space in Pennala will be over 100,000 sq m.
"Due to business growth, we have been forced to implement additional space solutions in warehousing, which has increased the number of warehouses to five," said Olli Salmivaara, logistics director at Rautakesko.
"For our customers, this will result in a more cost-effective and environmentally sound service of a higher quality."
Also this month, Rautakesko announced that it will open Russia's 13th K-rauta store in St Petersburg.
