Supply chain efficiency is an issue that needs to be tackled by the UK's agriculture industry, it has been claimed.
David Evans, head of agriculture for Morrison Supermarkets, has stressed that the main problem seems to be how products are moved through the supply chain, the Farmers Guardian reports.
According to the publication, Mr Evans made a point of saying that the supermarket has worked hard to establish good relationships with its suppliers in the farming industry.
He said that Morrisons' "closer to source" programme had helped the supermarket to supply lamb, pork and beef that is 100 per cent British.
Mr Evans was quoted by the Farmers Guardian as saying: "Alliances within the supply chain will become far more important to retailers, processors and producers. All of this will be security of supply; ultimately price doesn't come into it.
"The company has done quite well in developing supply chains in those areas (beef, pork, lamb) particularly."
He went on to say that Morrisons is prepared to put money into supply chain research and projects "but that farmer must then implement it" and pass the results onto the rest of the industry.
