Representatives from the UK's pork industry have gathered to discuss various issues currently affecting its supply chain.
The Pig Meat Task Force met yesterday (March 18th) in a bid to determine what key areas should be focused on within the industry and specifically what can be done to improve its supply chain, meatinfo.co.uk reports.
According to the site, a number of things were discussed, including the burden of red tape, the possibility of standardising food labelling and improving the health of animals.
Jane Kennedy, the farming minister, expressed her pleasure at how so many different sections of the industry were represented at the group's first meeting.
She was quoted by meatinfo.co.uk as saying: "I want the group to improve things for consumers and the supply chain by delivering on issues such as clearer labelling, better pig health, and greater public sector procurement of higher welfare products. The industry needs action and results."
The Pig Meat Task Force was originally created by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and has 17 members.
