As the biggest supermarket in the UK, Tesco has a particularly successful supply chain.

However, it is not without its flaws and in recent years the retail giant has begun to implement a number of new strategies to deliver lower prices, better availability and meet energy efficiency targets.

According to Supply Chain Analysis, Tesco has "continued to focus on improving the utilisation of its asset" in the last year, with the use of double-deck trailers highlighted as one efficiency generating area.

The implementation of such trailers has improved vehicle fill per loud and has lowered Tesco's CO2 emissions per case of goods delivered by ten per cent.

Late last month it was revealed that Tesco was losing out on its market share in the UK due to the recession, with Aldi and Lidl gaining ground due to their discount products.

In the first 12 weeks to April 19th, figures from TNS showed that its share dropped to 30.6 per cent of the market, down from 31.1 per cent the year before.
