New legislation is required to protect farmers and growers from receiving artificially low returns, an agriculture committee of MEPs has said.
Committee members also urged for prices to be transparent as part of a bid to enforce fair competition at all levels of the supply chain.
Issues including the dominance of retail customers, unfair commercial and contractual practices and late payments were all addressed in a report drawn up by French MEPs, which suggested measures for improvement that were approved by the committee.
It commended the idea to impose penalties and a complaint mechanism to prevent unfair behaviour in the market.
The committee's views are echoed by supply chain professionals in the UK, France and Spain, where there are increasing calls for new regulations.
This September, AMR Research will host Europe's first Supply Chain Executive Conference in London.
