The government is taking action to tackle a glass ceiling on social mobility, using such plans to help boost growth.

The new Unleashing Aspiration report, the final publication from the Panel on Fair Access to the Professions, confirms that numerous recommendations for action in relation to social mobility will be made.

Prime minster Gordon Brown said: "My mission is to ensure that all of Britain's people, from every background, are given the opportunity to develop their talents and learn the skills which will transform their lives."

He added that such social mobility must be rooted in core values of fairness.

A number of new schemes will be developed to help remove barriers to social mobility.

Programmes such as Skills for Growth and Higher Ambitions - designed to give young people the support they need to enter the professions are being developed, while a drive to encourage more people through the higher education system is also in place.
