PAC recognises contribution of PFI to UK infrastructure

Private finance initiatives (PFI) have a key role to play in improving the UK's roads and infrastructure, those considering supply chain transport planning have been told.

Dr Neil Bentley, deputy director general at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), has responded to the Public Affairs Committee (PAC) report on these arrangements by reaffirming the model's ability to deliver courts and roads.

He recognised that PFI is not always the most suitable option but that it should still be used where it offers the government the best value for money.

Dr Bentley added: "The CBI is calling for greater transparency in PFI contracts and for improvements to public sector procurement."

He warned that PFI may be the only way to make the major investments in infrastructure that the UK economy currently needs.

The deputy director general added that the private sector needed clarity about how these arrangements will evolve.

Earlier this month, research published by Transporeon and Capgemini found that European supply chain transport planning costs are currently running at a three-year high.
