Security 'key concern in supply chain strategy'

One area that is often ignored in supply chain strategy is that of security, but this must not be overlooked, an expert has claimed.

Simon Kaye, founder and chief executive of Jaguar Freight Services, has told IFW that this is particularly important considering the threats presented by cyber-crime, terrorism and piracy.

He warned: "A poorly constructed or outdated supply security approach that inadequately incorporates the latest technology and methodology leaves any company easy prey to aggressive thieves who exploit any lack of security preparation."

Mr Kaye highlighted the role that the International Organization for Standardization – ISO 28000 have to play in supply chain security measurement and and stated that these can be used by companies of all sizes to deal with these issues.

Another key force enacting change in the sector is the growth of internet retailing and its impact on consumption patterns, Supply Chain Standard's Penelope Ody has claimed.

She highlighted the fact that this has led to a change in customer's expectations and has forced the industry to innovate.
