New rules put into place by the Department for Transport could mean that signs warring haulage drivers are being sent the wrong way down streets by the satellite navigation systems are commonplace in the near future.

Norman Baker, minister for transport, has put forward a new set of rules to parliament which would mean that local authorities would no longer need to see government approval to introduce the signs in areas where they are needed.

"I am bringing an end to the ludicrous situation where councils have to come to central government for permission to put up signs they need to use on a regular basis to manage their roads,” said Mr Baker.

“This will also allow them to more easily introduce new signs – like those which will prevent satnavs directing huge lorries down narrow country lanes.

In 2008, a Scottish cottage was crashed into by lorry drivers 15 times because of incorrect information being given by sat-navs.
