B&Q praises green supply chain strategy

Tuesday, 16/6/2009 04:57
Retail outlet B&Q has hailed its new distribution fleet, claiming that it could help to significantly cut its carbon footprint.

The company has just invested in 60 double-decker buses, which have much greater capacity than its current vehicles.

This means that its supply chain strategy will be far more efficient and less polluting, as it means fewer trips will need to be made.

Rick Jones, logistics director at B&Q, commented: "They can carry as much as 50 per cent more than those in our traditional fleet.

"We're getting traffic off the road with these double-decker lorries."

This should also result in cost reductions for the retail chain, as it will be spending less on fuel and other vehicle expenses.

B&Q believes the new lorries should help it to take about 4,800 miles off its overall mileage figures every day.

This comes after Andy France, energy manager at the company, said it is a "responsible business" which wants to make sizable reductions in its overall energy use.
