Transport planning on the continent is set to become much easier after the European Commission announced plans to spend £28 billion on upgrading infrastructure and building missing links to reduce congestion.
The plans are part of an overall £44 billion scheme, which also includes improvements to European energy supplies and digital networks.
EC transport vice president Siim Kallas said the investment would help connect 83 main European ports with road and rail links as well as providing 37 cities with train connections to major airports.
"Transport is fundamental to an efficient EU economy, but vital connections are currently missing. Without good connections Europe will not grow or prosper," said Mr Kallas.
It has been estimated that by 2020, some £436 billion will be needed to provide European with a suitable transport network. £218 billion of that figure will be used for removing bottlenecks and completing core networks which have missing links
In order for the scheme to start it will need to be approved by EU member states and the European Parliament.
