Logistics firms 'should take grants'

Companies working in the logistics sector should take advantage of any opportunity to use grants for the establishment of apprenticeship places for individuals who are coming out of education, it has been claimed.

Dr Mick Jackson, chief executive of the sector skills council for the freight logistics industry Skills for Logistics, said that employers should make the most of the chance to receive £2,500 of funding towards the cost of developing new apprenticeship places for 16 and 17-year-olds.

"The benefits to both employers and young people resulting from the growth in apprenticeships over recent years have been obvious," said Dr Jackson, adding that there have been clear advantages for numerous jobs within the sector.

As part of the efforts to move swiftly from the recession, taking on new workers at the start of their careers will be necessary, he said.

Such grants will be available to logistics firms looking to make process improvements until the end of March.

Last month, the same organisation argued that logistics providers should take advantage of government funding for management training for future leaders.
