M&S boss admits supply chain problems

Problems with the supply chain have been blamed for the errors in Marks & Spencer's first mainland Chinese store.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Sir Stuart Rose, the boss of the retail giant, claimed that supply chain problems left much of the Shanghai food hall without supplies.

Sir Stuart added that it also misjudged sizes, basing its Shanghai ones on Hong Kong, meaning that many of the small sized clothes quickly sold.

"We had a screw up," Sir Stuart said. "We need to get the A to Z of sizing right and we need better market research. That's what I call basic shop keeping."

The British store has had some finance problems due to the recession, having to scale back some of its huge expansion plans and make 1,200 job losses after its worst trade performance for nearly ten years.

Outside of the UK, the store has more than 285 outlets.
