Offshore wind industry 'must work on supply chain'

Thursday, 01/7/2010 04:59
All parties involved in the offshore wind industry should work together to create an "indigenous UK supply chain", RenewableUK has said.

"Offshore wind must deliver the job opportunities and economic advantage that onshore wind failed to capture," chairman Andrew Jamieson said at the RenewableUK Offshore Wind 2010 event in Liverpool.

A recent report by the Green Investment Bank Commission estimated that £550 billion in investment would be required to help the UK reach its climate change and renewable energy targets up until 2020.

According to Mr Jamieson, the country's offshore wind industry is going "from strength to strength" but all of the parties involved in it had to do "all that is humanly possible" to ensure more jobs are created.

"I call on our stakeholders, in government and regulation, to protect our fragile investor confidence. This is an industry that is set to grow and we want to do everything that is possible to help it get there," he concluded.

Steve Millward, supply chain and sustainability directors at Jewson, told industry professionals at the Sustainable Business conference that it was time for a renewed focus on green supply chains.
