Training and guidelines should be given to staff to protect a company online, it has been suggested.
Tony Neate, the managing director of Get Safe Online, said that training was imperative to make sure that a business was protected.
Mr Neate added: "Training in this issue is a big thing. It doesn't matter if you train one member of staff, a thousand members of staff or just yourself."
The Federation of Small Businesses has claimed that small businesses lose up to £800 every year to fraud and online crime.
Half of businesses have reported being a victim of crime in the last 12 months, with 37 per cent having difficulty with phishing emails, 15 per cent to card not present fraud and the same figure having IT problems due to viruses and hackers.
Such problems can cause deep issues for a company's supply chain, which can be easily hit when financial difficulties occur.
