Transport and logistics firms in the UK will soon need to ensure drivers of vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes have the proper accreditation.
Commercial vehicle operators will be required to own a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence from September 10th 2009.
The Road Haulage Association is therefore running a training course to ensure that companies' supply chain strategies are legally compliant and that hauliers are aware of the necessary requirements.
Steve Ellis, head of training at the group, said: "The fact we have had 1,000 bookings is tremendously encouraging."
He stated that the training packages the RHA provides are highly comprehensive and "vital" for drivers working within the industry.
Mr Ellis added that in-house training sessions can be arranged for businesses that prefer to have staff trained on their own premises.
The requirement for lorry drivers to hold the certificate comes a year after it became compulsory for bus and coach drivers.
