The Scottish National Party (SNP) is seeking to boost the UK's logistics sector to help businesses beat the recession.
The organisation, which is currently the largest party in the Scottish Executive, has tabled a proposal to change Westminster's current budget finance bill to help out more people in the haulage industry.
"Road haulage workers are losing their jobs more quickly than almost any other sector and these appalling statistics must be a wake-up call for," said SNP treasury spokesman Stewart Hosie.
The SNP is calling on the government to introduce a road fuel regulator that the party claims would help to ensure motorists and those in the logistics sector are getting a fair deal on the price they pay on Britain's petrol forecourts.
Mr Hosie added: "It would give a real lifeline to Scotland's hauliers who are unable to plan effectively for the future because they do not know what the price of fuel will be."
Logistics companies in Northern Ireland have called on the government to provide more support to the sector.
The Northern Ireland Exporters Association told the Belfast Telegraph that the industry faced losing even more jobs as the recession deepens unless ministers act to provide some relief for the sector.
