Supply chains' energy efficiency under scrutiny

Friday, 11/6/2010 12:37
Construction companies are being encouraged to reduce the CO2 emissions of their supply chains after the government approved a new energy efficiency monitor.

The Environment Agency has given the nod to The Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme (CEMARS), the chosen certification standard for Achilles' Carbon Reduction programme.

Businesses will be able to use the Carbon Reduction scheme to measure their carbon footprints and that of other firms, helping them to manage their emissions more effectively.

Lucy D'Arville, director of carbon reduction services at Achilles, said: "This is a sensible decision that now offers companies affected by the Carbon Reduction Commitment a choice of standard for achieving their Early Action Metric."

The scheme is the only one in the UK which satisfies the standards detailed in ISO14064 Part 1 and is recognised by all the world's major economies.

According to Steve Millward, supply chain and sustainability director at Jewson, sustainable supply chains are also more efficient and cost effective.
