Sustainable supply chain management 'becoming more common'

A growing number of businesses are adopting sustainable supply chain management strategies.

According to Taiga Company, progressive procurement organisations are increasingly looking to review processes, materials and operations to see where changes can be made to improve eco-efficiency.

"It is becoming more common for organisations to incorporate the role of the environmental and social responsibility metrics in supply chain value creation," the firm commented.

Major international companies such as IBM have been commended for their efforts to implement sustainable measures in their supply chains.

In the US, Kaiser Permanente became the country's first healthcare company to launch a rating system based on the environmental impact of its supply chain.

As part of the new measures, the firm will evaluate each product and service supply chain as a single full lifecycle system.

Frozen food giant Birds Eye is set to implement its Forever Food Programme, aimed at improving supply chain sustainability.
