Reports have emerged that one expert is calling for changes in the law which may affect those in logistics transport planning.
The Financial Times reports that RAC Foundation director Stephen Glaister has suggested the government would be able to better manage some of its road networks if they were sold off to the private sector.
According to the piece the expert believes this may also generate "billions" in much-needed funds to help support the country in a time of economic difficulty.
It is suggested discussions have already taken place regarding the matter between Professor Glaister and Whitehall officials recently and the proposals could help the UK cope with plans to improve rail services.
Previously, the RAC spokesman told the publication that funds might be generated not from road user charging, but by increases in road taxes or fuel duty.
"Over time, this could be replaced with motorway tolls, which are common in France and Italy, with - further down the line - a road-charging scheme across the country," the article added.
According to Reuters, some analysts have expressed concern that current UK deficits could see spending on road projects cut.
